Short answer: llms.txt is a text file at yourcompany.com/llms.txt that summarizes the business and links to the most important pages, written for AI. It is a proposal from 2024, not a standard, and no major AI service has confirmed that it reads it. It takes an hour to write and cannot hurt, but what decides whether AI mentions you is still a clear, fast website.
What goes in the file?
The file is written in Markdown and follows a simple pattern: the business name as a heading, a summary, a few key facts and then links to the pages that matter most. This is how ours starts, slightly shortened:

What it can and cannot do
| llms.txt can | llms.txt cannot |
|---|---|
| Give a short, correct summary of the business | Guarantee that an AI mentions you |
| Gather prices and facts in one place | Replace clear pages on the site |
| Point out the most important pages | Let in crawlers that robots.txt keeps out |
Is it worth it?
For most businesses: yes, as a complement. It is free, quick to write and forces you to put what you do into a couple of lines. That is useful even if no crawler ever reads it.
But spend the time on the right things first. AI services mostly read regular web pages. What makes the biggest difference is letting the crawlers in, pages that answer questions directly and describing the business with structured data. We cover that in how your business shows up in ChatGPT and Google AI.
How we do it: Our llms.txt is not written by hand. It is built from the same data files as the site, so prices, services and contact details in the file always match what the pages say.
How to write your own
- The business name as a heading
- A two to three sentence summary: what, for whom, where
- Key facts: address, contact, languages, prices
- Links to the service pages, pricing page and contact page with a line about each
- Save it as llms.txt at the root of the site
- Update it when prices or services change
