Short answer: In Sweden, a simple website from an agency often starts at around 10,000 SEK (roughly €900) as a one off price. On top of that come hosting, a domain, updates and changes. With a monthly price you pay a fixed amount every month instead, with us from €99, and both the build and the running of the site are included.
Website prices vary enormously. Not because agencies charge at random, but because “a website” can mean anything from three pages with contact details to a site with booking, two languages and hundreds of articles. This guide helps you understand what you are paying for.
What drives the price?
The biggest items are almost always the same:
- Number of pages and amount of copy. More pages means more design, more writing and more testing.
- Template or custom design. A template is cheaper, but looks like many other sites.
- Features. Booking, e-commerce, logins and integrations with other systems cost extra.
- Languages. Every language is effectively another site to write, translate and maintain.
- Copy and photos. Are you writing it yourself, or should the agency?
- SEO. A basic technical level should always be included. Ongoing work on content and rankings is a separate service.
The costs after launch
Many people only budget for the build and forget what comes after. These are common running costs:
- Domain: a small yearly fee, usually from about €10 to €30.
- Hosting: from a few euros to a few tens of euros a month, depending on the provider.
- Licenses: sites built with WordPress and a page builder often rely on plugins with a yearly license.
- Updates: WordPress, the theme and plugins need regular updates. Skipping them raises the risk of a break in.
- Changes: new pages, copy and photos. Many agencies charge by the hour for these.
That is why two sites with the same build price can cost very different amounts over three years.
One off price or monthly price?
| One off price | Monthly price | |
|---|---|---|
| Start | The full amount up front | No or a low setup fee |
| Running and hosting | Paid separately | Included |
| Updates | Your job, or hourly rate | Included |
| Changes | Often hourly rate | Small changes included |
| Improvements | When you order them | Ongoing |
A one off price suits you if you want to own everything straight away and have someone to look after the site afterwards. A monthly price suits you if you want a site that works and keeps improving, without having to think about it.
A worked example
The numbers below are made up to show how to compare, not prices from any particular agency.
- One off: €2,300 for the build, €14 a month for hosting and 2 hours of changes per quarter at €85. The first year comes to about €3,150.
- Monthly: €199 a month with hosting and changes included. The first year comes to €2,388.
After three years the picture can look different, depending on how much the site changes. Always compare over at least three years, and budget for changes. There are almost always more than you expect.
Five questions to ask before you choose
- Who owns the domain? It should always be registered to you, not the agency.
- Who owns the content? Copy and photos you paid for should be yours.
- What happens if I want to leave? Get the answer in writing.
- What does SEO mean in practice? Ask for a list of what is done.
- How fast is the site? Ask for an example and test it yourself in Google PageSpeed Insights.
